A day for Temples

3 November 2014

It was another rainy day in Shanghai and our toes got wet through our boots as we marched through metro stations and out onto the street.  We went first to the Jade Buddha Temple, a lovely compound in traditional temple style that features an immense (you guessed it) Buddha statue made of jade in the second floor of the largest pavilion.  It cost extra to actually go and see the famous statue, and you weren't allowed to take photos of it.

The gift shop sold miniature jade statues, and all sorts of interesting knick knacks - but I was more interested in the architecture, and the orchids.  It was an old temple, and still functioning.

Next we headed to a new temple, Jing'an - but the entry fee was a little steep for us poor student type tourists, so we simply admired from the front gates, and headed back inside the metro station to get out of the rain.

Our last destination for the day was not a temple - but the Shanghai museum. It was finally rainy enough that we figured we could spend the afternoon indoors.  The museum was immense, and full of beautiful and interesting things. We walked until we wore ourselves out.
