Guilin is a tourist center for a very good reason. It's right in the middle of a million amazing landscapes full of rivers and temples and mountains and things to go and see. Bea and I signed ourselves up for a day long tour that took us out of the city and to a place along the Lijiang river.
One of the parks that we visited was named after this great big tree. It's a good luck tree. It's ancient, and you aren't *supposed* to get close enough to put good luck ribbons on it.... but somehow people have managed.
The tree was surrounded by a big park that ran sat in a curve of the river. There were rafts to take downstream, historical monuments, a theatre turned museum (I think), and a water buffalo that you could (for a price) sit astride whilst having your picture taken.
"Everybody wants a water buffalo!" (name that quote?)
We also go to take one of these cool looking cruisers and meander our way down and back up a portion of the river. The views were stunning.
It was a touch chilly - we stayed inside the covered part of the boat mostly. I really want to return in the summertime.
Since a cruising boat wasn't involved enough for us - we *also* got to ride a pole-propelled raft down a different part of the river. The gondolier (are they still called that when it's a raft?) let each of us try our hand at steering the raft down the river. It was fun. ^_^
