A Rainy Day

6 July 2013

I love the way the air smells after rainfall.

I also love that the evening is cooling off enough to lower the temperature in my apartment.

It's turned out to be a lazy sort of day, although it didn't start out that way.  I was asked to be the food specialist for the stake Girls Camp this year. 70 girls and 30 leaders to feed for 2 days. It was great, and I enjoyed it, but I was glad it was only 2 days worth of meals! I couldn't have fit any more food into my truck.
O_o

I asked a friend of mine to help me out, and between the two of us we bought a truckload (literally) of groceries.

We made snacks, and extra cheesy mac and cheese bake with ham and jello salad.
We made french toast and bacon and fruit salad.
Taco salad!
Shishkabobs and ceasar salad and garlic bread.
Smores and banana boats and hot chocolate every night. Angel food cake with strawberries and cream
Plain old cereal, and any leftovers we thought they might eat (including shishkabobs) for breakfast this morning, as it was their last day. I was amazed at how many people ate the shishkabobs. O_O
And then wraps and more leftovers and oodles of cookies (which the girls brought for us) to take home for lunch today.

I left the camp around 11:30 am. The kitchen was clean. The food was all gone. Empty coolers were in my truck, and I scored sweet thai chili sauce and a couple left over loaves of bread.

I unpacked the truck at my parents place and got in my car and came home.
And crashed.
A 2 hour nap later, I was ready for the rest of the day.
^_^

Read a book. Drank peppermint tea. Had supper (amazing to cook for 1 instead of 100!) Lounged about. Threw out a bunch of stuff I've been meaning to toss.

Remembered I need hamburger buns for supper tomorrow, and sauntered over to the store. Where I also bought a watermelon. ^_^

The drive to the store was beautiful - the rain had just stopped, and air smelled earthy and clean. There was a chunk of a rainbow stretching up the sky and being eaten by the dusty looking clouds, turned orange and pink from the setting sun, with the palest shadow of a double arch glimmering against the sky.

I was sorry I hadn't brought my camera.
And of course, it had all faded away by the time I'd grabbed my groceries and headed home again.

Still.
I think my favourite part of the day (other than sleeping in my own bed) is the smell of the air outside. I wish I could bottle that, and take a whiff every time I needed to feel refreshed.
