incense, candles, red, and gold

21 March 2014

Day 5 wasn't very exciting, so we are skipping straight to day 6. (trust  me. I think all I accomplished on day 5 was sleeping - jet lag is a right pain)

This is one of my absolute favourite pictures that I'm bringing home from China.
I took it, and then looked at it on the display of my camera, tried to hold back some little happy tears, and snuggled my nice new camera that was doing such lovely things. Don't worry, I don't think anyone noticed....

I took this picture in the first courtyard at Yonghegong Lama Temple. There was this brazier for incense, and a large round thing (don't ask me for more than one technical term, ok?) that you could put long, skinny, red candles on and light them.

We met a young Chinese man at the metro stop on our way to the temple. He kindly pointed us in the right direction. Then, since he was going there to send up some prayers (he had just applied for a masters program) he came with us.  Bea had fun talking to him in Chinese, and I appreciated that he could also speak wonderful English.  He took a couple pictures of us so I could be in them. Thank you!

It was a beautiful place; several long buildings that led you through to the next courtyard, and beautiful building, and incense and candles and places to send your prayers to buddha.  And a few meandering, slightly confused looking tourists mingled in with everyone else, who all seemed to know what they were doing.

The detail was amazing, and the colours were so vibrant - everything was painted and embellished, or carved into intricate little vignettes.
Even the roof tiles had carvings.

  1. Love your photos ! You should make a book when you get home of them! To keep forever on your coffee table! To begin conversations with visitors who come to your home, and you will be guaranteed hours of conversation :-)
