My sister and I had been planning this trip for a little over a year by the time I actually got there. We had all sorts of ideas of the places we were going to visit while she had time off school and we could travel together.
So - early on in my visit, we sat down with a map, and she pointed out our suggested route of touring to me. Since I hadn't much idea what half the places were, I followed her lead, and we set a rough schedule for 3 weeks of straight travel in a big loop through the north-eastern part of China.
First stop: Shanghai.
We flew down on some cheap flights Bea found, and planned to spend 3 or 4 days there. Bea had friends living in the city, and there are lots of things to see in Shanghai! Our first day we took to the streets (harhar) and wandered around the downtown area, near the Bund.
We walked a lot farther and a lot more than we originally intended - because the bus we took didn't go where we thought it was going to. And because, for some reason, we simply couldn't seem to find the Shanghai Museum. It's a big building, I'm not sure why it was a problem....
Bea was our fearless navigator, and our map was very well used by the end of the day.... Walking around certainly proved interesting, and I very much enjoyed it. Such a lot of history to see in one city.
We also stumbled upon Yu Yuan Gardens, which we hadn't intended to visit til the next day. It was jam packed full of people, as most pedestrian only areas in China seem to be. Constantly.
We did eventually find the museum, but by then it had already closed. So we made note of which buses stopped in front of it, and headed back to our humble abode. And had supper in our room, and slept the sleep of the over-walked.
